- The visual world of Greg Singley is filled with irises, lilies and lush fields of sunlit flowers, recalling the exquisite gardens of Greensboro, Alabama he knew as a boy. He renders the flow of color and subtle shifts of sunlight on flower filled vistas, with such sensitivity and affection, it has been said to rival the mastery of the late 19th Century French Impressionists.
As evidenced by his paintings today, Singley credits Monet and Renoir as his great inspiration. But the influence of Fritz Scholder and Paul Pletka moved him to relocate to the West and paint his first series of canvases portraying Native Americans. Greg still finds the turn of the century American history exciting and would like to have " gone out West to homestead a large parcel of land".
Out 'West' under the California sunshine and the spectacular images of the terrain, Greg is a man whose soul is on fire with color - not just with a single color, but an explosion of the palette. His paints celebrate the resplendence of every hue of the rainbow. Although he describes himself as an impressionist, from a distance his paints appear to be unequivocally realistic. He will at times use a palette knife, even his fingers in order to apply the paint to the canvas more dramatically, more intuitively, but always using a brush for highlights, shadows and other fine details.
Greg Singley paints from the heart, with great passion! He chooses his colors utterly without calculation!
"I feel the same things the original impressionists must have felt--it's a feeling that tells me what to do" . Singley
