Rick Garcia, American (1953 - )
In the mid eighties Rick Garcia's paintings were regularly shown on the hit TV show "Miami Vice". They were used for interior shots as well as backdrops. One episode featured an outdoor mural painted on the side of a building, which measured three stories tall by 60's wide. He had seven days to complete it before the shooting was to take place. Later the wall became a backdrop for TV commercials for Eastern Airlines and Coca-Cola, as well as fashion shows for many international magazines.
Don Johnson had Garcia create a personal Christmas card for him. It was featured in USA Today and other newspapers around the world.
Garcia later began to do the work for the music industry, where two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees and 60's legend Dion, commissioned his work.
In an unprecedented campaign to discover the top talent in contemporary art, Rick Garcia was soon discovered by ABSOLUT VODKA. In 1990 he was named "ABSOLUT ARTIST of the 90's". His artwork was then publicized worldwide which brought his name to the awareness of many new collectors. Again he was commissioned by ABSOLUT to create what became a controversial work. A religious piece, it depicted the "First Station of the Cross". The painting hung in the Chapel St. Denis in France along with works of other artists commissioned by ABSOLUT. The small community created uproar over these unique images and demanded the work be taken down.
A couple of years later Garcia envisioned a guitar as an ABSOLUT bottle. He than had a guitar built in the shape of the bottle, painted his imagery on it, and "ASOLUT ELECTRIC" was born. This new ad also went on to be published worldwide an soon found its way into the Paul McCartney World Tour Book.
After Hurricane Andrew devastated Homestead, Florida, in 1992, Garcia was commissioned to create a painting which became a poster for a benefit concert hosted by Gloria Estefan. Proceeds from the sales of the poster went to the victims of the hurricane.
